At what age should I start training my puppy? Is my dog too old to go through training?

Time and time again we’ve heard these types of concerns from our clients. Clients who are concerned that their puppy is not yet old enough to go through training or clients concerned that their dog is too old to ‘learn a new trick’.

The fact of the matter is from the minute puppies are born they perceive information from the world around them and learning from it. From the minute you take your new puppy home he/she is learning about you and from you. The best time to start training with your puppy is right away. Start small at first, puppies do a shorter attention span than older dogs, but they are already learning.

Some key concepts to start teaching your puppy as soon as you bring him/her home are: crate training, and house training. The 2 will go hand and hand and crate training is especially useful while house training your dog.

One of the great things about dogs is that they live in the present. Just because they have lived one way for 10 years does not mean that they are incapable of change. Your dog is just looking to you to provide consistent leadership and to set boundaries and rules.
